Chapter 23

After I fully plunge into the portal and fall out on the other side, I'm mostly in disarray. The last words of the God of Beasts echo in my ears. He said that he was a… skill summon? The skill <God of Beasts>? So he's not some adopted child of the first emperor, but actually one of his subordinates…

That explains a lot of things, actually. Maybe it's also the reason that <Investigate> didn't work on him, and why he gave off an eerie, inhuman feel, like a doll. His skin was too clear, and his body was too perfect.

I really don't know how the hell I didn't notice it before.

Struggling to get up, I roll over and then promptly fall on my side. Pain spikes through my ribs, and it shocks my system. Groaning, I whisper curses as I slam my weak feet into the ground—my feet are the only thing I can really manage to move.

After a few moments, I finally manage to roll onto my stomach. Using every ounce of my remaining strength, I bring my head up and open my eyes wide. In front of me, no more than a few hundred meters a way, is the Den.

It's a giant forest, although there's no border which separates it from any other land. That actually makes sense, pretty much. There isn't human civilization to be seen for miles around this place.

"Fuck, I've got to get up and check my skills… and Aria as well." Breathing heavily, I manage to calm myself down and close my eyes. Remembering my pulse and heartbeat, I let mana slowly collect back into my body, so that I can finally move again.

It takes a minute. Then two, then three…

Finally!

After four minutes, I have enough mana to get moving. Swiftly pushing myself off the ground, I dust my clothes off—though they are ragged and torn, barely recognizable from all the gunk and dirt.

Looking to my left, I see Aria. However, she's still… sleeping?

I walk over to her, and then press one of my fingers onto her wrist, attempting to check her pulse. I would have channeled mana into her body, but I don't have a skill where that would actually help.

"She's barely alive? How?" I wonder aloud. "Lon, Boro, are you guys there?"

[I'm here, Master Jace. Lon is currently sleeping however, and I don't really want to wake him up. Ahem, though, are you fine, Master Jace? You seem troubled.]

"I'm fine, Boro." I find myself with a soft look on my face. "But the girl I need to transport isn't. She should be awake by now."

[Try using <Investigate>.]

Hmm, that's actually a good idea! I don't know how I didn't think of that before, maybe traveling through the portal and witnessing the battle between my father and the God of Beasts took a toll on my mental capacity.

I attempt to use <Investigate>.

But it doesn't work. Runes circl around me, buzzing with mana. Slowly, they turn themselves into a message. A very familiar message.
